Dear Warren,
I am a student in 5th grade and I am very interested in tornadoes and storms. When I am older I whant to be a storm chaser. What is storm chasing like? Is it fun or scary? I think your job is so cool! We just finished reading your book “Eye of the Storm” in school. I hope to here from you!

The storms in most part seemed to be avoiding me in June. June was still O.K. Saw a tornado between Ingalls and Cimarron Kansas. Never got it on video because I got greedy trying to get closer to it. I wanted to get close enough to catch the rotation of the funnel on my camcorder, I got about mile from it and hopped out my truck and the tornado dissipated on me before I could film it. I guess I’ll have to get the contraption that lets you film while driving so I’ll at least get the tornadoes recorded when this scenario comes again. I did manage to get some awesome mammatus clouds on my way back home in Oklahoma. You have probably seen the photos of the ones in Hastings Nebraska. The ones I got are on that level. They don’t look the same as those, but they are unique compared to any photos I have seen of mammatus clouds. I even looked at your photos and didn’t find any that look like these I filmed. I was sure you would have some because the pictures of your storms are awesome. Maybe I just caught an extremely rare situation on sun angle and how I was positioned on the storm. It was an LP supercell to my west in the middle of June, the sun was setting in the northwest because of the time of year. The sun set where the storm couldn’t block it from hitting the anvil, and it really set off the look of these mammatus clouds as they were peaking out in their formation. You may have a picture like this, but if you do, it seems like I would have seen it already. I had to pull my camera lense all the way back because the mammatus clouds were so huge. They look like something in a sci-fi movie. I had to share this with you, because I know you appreciate other aspects of the weather besides tornadoes. I like the tornadoes, but there is so much to see out there in the skies.

Well I had really good parking spot for May 13, I was in between the towns of Lamont and Tonkawa Oklahoma. I got to view a strong tornado, and there was no chaos around me. I was expecting storm chasers to come from everywhere when I got on this tornado. I saw plenty of chasers on my previous storm, but they chose to hang with that one while I went after a supercell that was taking a dive to the southeast. It paid off, I got to view this tornado without all the chaos going on. My best experiences seem to be when I’m by myself. Not that I have anything against the other chasers. There’s just something about being by yourself when the weather is putting on a show. Warren, I know you have had to have this experience also. I hope next year can be a bit more active. This was my second year at doing this, and I’ve seen 9 tornadoes so far. 7 last year, and only 2 this year. For a while I was doubting myself this year, but I didn’t feel so bad when I heard Vortex 2 was struggling to get their first tornado. I was glad to hear they got the one in Wyoming, because time was running out. Good job on their part.
